Why these concepts are confused
A calendar and an operations board draw on the same underlying booking data, which makes it easy to assume they are two skins on one feature; naming their distinct questions side by side is exactly what resolves that assumption.
Operational difference
Removing the operations board in favor of only a calendar would leave what has to happen today implicit and require manual filtering; removing the calendar in favor of only an operations board would leave forward planning and conflict checking unanswered — neither view can replace the other.

Both views are built from the same underlying booking data and exist to keep operational visibility clear without a separate, disconnected tracking tool; a dashboard adds a third, exception-focused view on top of both without replacing either.
What this comparison does not claim
The calendar is not an operations board, and an operations board does not replace the calendar: removing either would leave one of their two distinct questions unanswered. That the calendar and the whiteboard/operations board are interchangeable views of the same information; they order the same bookings by different axes (time vs. stage).
